RE: Front Chains or Back Chains

You need to give some more info.
Are you on public highways, gravel roads, steep grades, side slopes, snow/ice etc.
On the highway, rear chains, outside wheel at the most. I refuse to drive with chains for more then a few miles, its just not worth it and if you are going any distance then you will wear through and break them. I don't like chains and seldom carry them.
Here the truckers will use chains for the passes (when required by law) and that is it, they get rid of them as soon as possible.
Steep grades (off road) with ice probably in front because in our situation there is a need for positive directional control.
Buy some extra chain binders, use them and check the chains often.

RE: speed cameras

Great Idea? Wait until the government wants more money, now its speed limit plus 10mph, then its the speed limit, then just lower the limit, oh to save fuel and keep us safe.
Your wallet is next.

RE: Need Advice - route and campgrounds Ouray CO

I would come in from the Gunnison area.
It would be better to go in the last half of July, more of the high passes will be open.
550 from Durango to Silverton is used by tour buses for the train, I would think that you would not have that much trouble. Silverton is also a great place to stay. The 550 from Silverton to Ouray is tough because it is so very tight and the turns are also tight and the people on the outside of the slope and often very eeedddgggyyyy!
The NF Campground above Ouray is I believe called Amphitheater and its a little tight. You would probably have a hard time storing everything on one site.

RE: sway bars are they worth it?

We have the Reese Dual Cam System. We use in on two trailers, a 27 foot Sunnybrook and a 20 foot H&H enclosed car hauler with 10,000# capacity. We tow with an Suburban 8.1.
I have towed with and without the Dual Cam hooked up and it is noticeably better with the Dual Cam System hooked up.
I find its most noticeable in windy situations and when trucks pass.

RE: New Tires?

The concept that "tires can't be change too often" (it applies to oil and other things as well) is just a waste of resources, and people talk about going green, conservation and recycling. Hey, I go to the used tire rack just to see if there is anything good there. I agree, keep it up, the dealer knows now to take your money and recycle those tires.

RE: 2005 Suburban 2500

BurbMan, no wonder you only get 6-7, you tow an 8800# trailer. With our Sunnybrook lite 27' we get at least 8 mpg and sometimes close to 10 mpg.

RE: 2005 Suburban 2500

The transmission is a 4 speed and it has been a trouble free transmission for us. In our previous Suburban we had the predecessor and that one went 147,000 trouble free miles and in our crew cab dually before that a variation went 287,000 trouble free miles,
The 8.1 has been reliable we have 80,000 miles on ours and its been trouble free.

RE: Reports: Chrysler, GM discuss merger,

The reason why more people bough GM trucks is because they got it right. Now if they can and eventually they will get the car business right.
Chrysler is not advantage to GM, they are kicking the tires to see what they can get out of the deal, they have bought other companies before, they have mostly come and gone. The Jeep idea has a little value if they can get Chrysler for nothing with a long term payout, and then sell out the truck line to Nissan or who knows who. Some of the real estate may have value and maybe part of the deal would be more financing.
Somebody was arguing that Chrysler sells more trucks then GM and Ford, that is nonsense. Consistently GM has sold more trucks then Ford and Chrysler, people like them.
GM has had an arrogance issue for decades, one of these days it will bite them in the butt, if they don't get a clue on the car lines. I don't think it is now.

RE: 8.1 Liter Suburban Performance

Burbman, I would suggest that you reread the original question.
Secondly, maybe you should consider your driving technique and maintenance of the vehicle.
I have actually gotten 17mpg with the vehicle traveling on level ground and at 55mph, lightly loaded.

RE: A SMart car in your future?

I don't think that you have to be smart not to buy one. My neighbor who goes to the auto auction several times a week says that it is full of used Prius that are not selling. Doesn't make sense.

RE: 8.1 Liter Suburban Performance

An 8.1 will get over 14 if driven under 75 with a medium load, ie. 4 people and baggage. We will get 14 pulling a popup under 70.
I have pulled an 11,000# plus boat from Denver to Lake Powell many times with our 8.1 Suburban with 4.10 axles. Going up hill you are going to be in the right lane doing about 45 with some reserve. Going down hill you are going to be in the right lane going about 45.
Towing either the boat or the trailer we get between 8 mpg and 10 at 60 mph.
The 8.1 is a great gas engine.

RE: how efficient is your TC? shouldnt we ask for more

For an item that may be used only 2 weeks a year how much efficiency do most people need. We use ours about 30 nights a year, even so it makes more sense to make your home that is used 365 days a year more efficient.
As many people have pointed out, it costs a lot of money to make a highly efficient unit.
I think the money could be spent on other items that would be used daily. for instance if you really want solar heating or wind generation, doesn't it make make sense to add it to your home for at least part of the power and use it 365 days of the year.
I realize that a camper needs a certain amount of equipment to do what a person wants it to do. To each their own.

RE: 4X4

For towing, no! In the rain its just not necessary. A big 4X4 off road can be a real a pig. Forget deep mud, forget deep unbroken snow, absolutely forget side slopes in these conditions. In mud, if its soft you can go right to the axles and its over.
Frankly if you really need traction its hard to beat chains.
In terms of mileage, 4X4 costs about 1-2 mpg, thats somewhere right about 10% decease in mileage. There is good 500# to 700# of additional weight with the transfer case, axle and driveshaft.
Where 4X4 is helpful is in snow on a paved roads, sometimes on gravel if its slippery.
Weight in the back end of a pickup can made a huge difference, chains will do everything a 4X4 will do, just slower and more inconvenient.

RE: Towing Specs 2005 For Excursion Diesel Can this be right???

The Excursion is a very large vehicle. Put them side by side and decide. Towing numbers will favor the GM. In reality, I don't think there is much difference in the practical towing capacity of the two.
If you use the vehicle every day, then which one is easier to use. I think that the GM gets better mileage due to the weight factor.

RE: Rocky Mountain NP to Moab Utah along the CO River?

From Grand Lake take 34 south to 40, go west to 131 then south to the Colorado River, just north of the river turn west on what is know as the Copper Spur to Burns and on to Dotsero which is where you will join with I-70. Take I-70 west to Utah.
In Utah get off at Cisco, maybe 10-20 miles into Utah. Go south to 128, 128 will take you to just north of Moab.
We have been on all of this route at different times.
The Copper Spur may still be gravel, and it used to be quite remote. I would not go this way with a bigger rig in bad weather, ie snow- you just never know. There may be gas in Burns, again you never know.
128 you know about 128.

RE: Az snowbirds - is Grand Canyon possible in Jan?

Yes. The question is best answered with, watch the weather patterns for a week or so in advance, call the park service at the Grand Canyon and ask about the weather before you come.
It can be snowing one day and clear and bright the next with no snow on the ground.
